Sub Genres of horror films.
Slasher – slasher film is referred to as body count films and dead. These films will involve a psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims in a violent manner often using a knife or axe. Here are some examples of slasher horror films.
A nightmare on ELM STREET – on Elm Street, Nancy Thompson and a group of her friends a clawed killer in their dreams named Freddy Krueger is tormenting including Tina Gray, Rod Lane and Glen Lantz. Nancy must think quickly, as Freddy tries to pick off his victims one by one. When he has you in your sleep, who is there to save you?
Freddy VS Jason – its been nearly ten years since Freddy Krueger terrorized people in the dreams, and then towns folk want to keep him erased from their memory. Freddy still has one more plan on getting back to Elm Street. He resurrects Jason Voorhees and sends him off to kill. The more bodies which fall to the ground, the stronger in which Freddy becomes. This is until, Freddy realizes that Jason isn’t going to step aside easily, and must be taken down himself.
Prom night – for six long years, Hamilton High School seniors Kelly, Jude, Wendy, ad Nick have been hiding the truth of what happened to ten year old Robin Hammond the day her broken body was discovered near an old abandoned convent. The foursome kept secret how they taunted Robin – baked her into a corner until, frightened, she stood on a window ledge… and fell to her death. Though an accident, the then twelve-year-olds feared they’d be held responsible and vowed never to tell. But someone else was there that day… watching. And now, that someone is ready to exact murderous revenge-on prom night.
Supernatural – films are those that depict events that appear beyond normal perceptions. I.e. paranormal activity. This includes villains wielding impossible-to-believe abilities (magical or otherwise), demons, monsters, vampires, werewolves, and doll horror.
Paranormal Activity - after a young, middle class couple moves into a suburban ‘starter’ tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep try to.
Final Destination – Alex is boarding his plane to France on a school trip, when he suddenly gets a premonition that the plan will explode. When Alex and a group of students are thrown off the plane, to their horror, the plane does in fact explode Alex must now work out death’s plan, as each of the surviving students falls victim. Whilst preventing the worst from happening, Alex must also dodge the FBI, which believes Alex caused the explosion.
Dream House – some say that all houses have memories. For one man, his home is the place he would kill to forget. A family unknowingly moves into a home where several grisly murders were committed… only to find themselves the killer’s next target. Successful publisher Will Atenton quit a job in New York City to relocate his wife, Libby, and two girls to a quaint New England town. But as they settle into their new life, they discover their perfect home was the murder scene of a mother and her children. And the entire city believes it was at the hands of the husband who survived. When will investigates the tragedy, his only lead comes from Ann Paterson, a neighbor who was close to the family that died. As Will and Ann piece together the disturbing puzzle, they discover that they story of the last man to leave Will’s dream house will be just as horrifying to the one who come next.
Comedy Horror – is a sub genre of horror films that combines horrific elements with comedic. The comedy horror genre almost always inevitably crosses over with the black comedy genre and in some respects cold be considered a subset of it.
Shaun of the dead – Shaun doesn’t have a very good day, so he decides to turn his life around by getting his ex to take him back, but he times it for right in the middle of what may be a zombie apocalypse… but for him, it’s an opportunity to show everyone he know how useful he is by saving them all. All he has to do is survive… and get his ex back.
Gremlins – miniature green monsters tear through the small town of Kingston Falls. Hijinks ensures as a mild-mannered bank teller releases these hideous loonies after gaining a new pet and violating two of three simple rules: No water, no food after midnight and no bright light. Hilarious mayhem and destruction in a town straight out of Norman Rockwell. So, when your washing machine blows up or your TV goes on the fritz, before you call the repairman, turn on all the lights and look under all the beds. Cause you never can tell, there just might be a gremlin in your house.
The Evil Dead – five friends go up to a cabin in the wood, where they find unspeakable evil lurking in the forest. They find a tome called the necronomicon and the taped translation of the text. Once the tape is played, the evil is released. One by one, the teens are possessed. With only one remaining, it is up to him to survive the night and battle the evil dead.
Apollo 18 – decades old found footage from NASA’s abandoned Apollo 18 mission, where two American astronauts were sent on a secret expedition, reveals the reason the U.S. has never returned to the moon.
Alien – the crew of the deep space mining ship Nostromo are awaken from hypersleep to investigate a strange signal from a nearby planet. While investigating the signal, they discover it was intended as a warning, and not an SOS.
The Darkest Hour – in Moscow, five young people lead the charge against an alien race who has attacked Earth via our power supply.
All of these sub genres are categories of horror films. They all represent different things; they represent slasher, comedy, sci-fi and supernatural. All horror films make you scared that is the purpose of them but they can also be there for you to laugh at. The comedy horror is more of a non-realistic film whereas the slasher, sci-fi, and supernatural are more of a realistic story. Even though they all come over in different sub genres they all have the ability to scare you and make you laugh.
The thing I expect from a horror film is that I expect to be scared and to hide behind a pillow. I want it to freak me out but then I would also like it to make me laugh if the story line of the film isn’t great. I would expect a lot of gore but then I wouldn’t mind some. They are the things I expect from a horror film but sometimes I get disappointed because they don’t live up to what people have said about them.
